Taking a look back at July 2011, Dr. Andreas Gal, Director of Research, Mozilla Corporation, announced the proposal of making a standalone operating system, that would in every way bridge the gaps for web developers to build apps that are no more different from native Android/iOS or Windows Phone 7 apps. This needed the power of web APIs along with basic OS capabilities like Phone and a camera.
Finally at CES 2013, its face was revelead under the hat of a basic ZTE smartphone. Naming the OS as Firefox OS.
Adding a little spice to it, Spanish phonemaker, Geeksphone announced the first 2 Firefox OS developer preview handsets, Keon and Peak. Low powered hardware. Low powered cost. Dont compare them with iPhone or any Android smartphone of an average range.

The Keon, which was shown off with a bright orange chassis, is powered by Qualcomm’s 1Ghz Snapdragon S1 processor — a chipset that made its debut in 2008. It also features 512MB of RAM and 4GB of included storage, though there is a microSD card slot for expanded storage. The handset, which has a 3.5-inch touchscreen with a resolution of 480?320 pixels, will run on 2G and 3G networks. There’s also a 3-megapixel rear camera but no front-facing camera.
The Peak is a bit more up market, with a 4.3-inch 960x540 pixel display, Qualcomm’s latest Snapdragon S4 processor, 3G and 2G connectivity, an 8-megapixel camera out back and a 2-megapixel front-facing camera. It’s got the same paltry 4GB of storage, with a microSD card slot, and RAM is stuck at 512MB.
Global Expansion:
The first rain drops of Firefox OS will fall on Brazil, Colombia, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain & Venezuela.
Till now 17 operators like America Movil, China Unicom, Deutsche Telecom, Stisalat, Hutchison 3 group, KDDI, KT, Megafon, QTel, Singtel, Smart, Sprint etc have agreed to shake hands with the latest open web device initiative.
HTML 5/CSS/Javascript:
Firefox OS smartphones will be built entirely to open web standards. Apps will be coded in HTML 5, Javascript and CSS. Native support of Firefox browser will be used to run these apps. Javascript and CSS will be responsible for User Interface and dynamic transitions.
Mozilla has already joined hands with players like Alcatel, ZTE and LG to provide basic smartphone capability models for its new innovation.
Firefox has already launched its OS simulator. All you need is a firefox browser and an add on of firefox OS simulator to be added to it. If you have a zeal to code, try it out with this pony.
Not only this, Mozilla has also announced to provide free firefox OS phones to developers. If you think you have an out of the box app in your brain, share it with them. If your app idea is upto their resonance, you will be given a free phone to develop and test your app, regardless of your geography. A Geeksphone handset to be precise. You can submit your app here.
Eyes are already set on this new young samurai in the ongoing battle between iOS/Android/Windows Phone 7. Will it prove its position with the swords of open web or just add a brick in the wall of current OS wars. A question left on time to be answered.
